Mt. Takao beginner day-hike course

Mt. Takao is located in Hachioji, western Tokyo, Japan. This route uses the cable car for the first climb, then follows Trail No. 1 to Yakuoin Temple and the 599-metre summit.

Getting there from central Tokyo

Take a Keio Line train to Takaosanguchi Station. Journey time depends on the departure station and service, so check a current route planner before travel. The trail area begins a short walk from the station.

Suggested schedule

9:00 — Arrive at Takaosanguchi

Use the restroom, buy water and walk to Kiyotaki Station. Earlier arrival is helpful on weekends and during autumn foliage.

9:20 — Take the cable car

Ride to Takaosan Station, then join Trail No. 1. Confirm the current timetable and fare on the operator’s official website.

10:20 — Visit Yakuoin Temple

Take a break and visit the temple before continuing to the summit. Expect slopes and stairs even on this beginner-oriented route.

11:10 — Reach the summit

Have lunch around the summit and leave enough time for the descent. Carry your rubbish back with you.

13:00 — Descend

Walk down Trail No. 1, or use the cable car if you are tired, in pain or the weather deteriorates. Safety takes priority over the planned schedule.

Before you go

  • Check the weather, trail notices and cable-car operation.
  • Wear familiar shoes with good grip.
  • Carry water, a light layer and rainwear.
  • Tell someone your destination and expected return time.
