TOKYO DAY TRIP / PACKING GUIDE
Mt. Takao beginner packing list
A simple checklist for Trail No. 1 on Mt. Takao in western Tokyo, Japan. Prioritise rain protection, water and a reliable way to communicate.
Seven essentials
- Comfortable shoes with good grip
- Water, with extra on hot days
- A small snack
- Rainwear that keeps both hands free
- A light extra layer
- A charged phone and mobile battery
- A bag for carrying rubbish home

Shoes
Choose shoes you have already worn. Avoid smooth, worn soles and brand-new footwear. Conditions can be slippery after rain or during winter.
Rainwear
A jacket-and-trouser set is more practical than relying only on an umbrella. Check fit, pack size, waterproofing and ease of movement.
Backpack
For this day trip, choose a pack that comfortably holds water, rainwear, a layer and food. Protect valuables in a separate waterproof pouch when rain is possible.
Phone battery
Charge both your phone and mobile battery the night before, and confirm that the cable connector fits. Follow physical trail signs as well as digital maps.
Seasonal additions
Spring and autumn
Wear layers that are easy to remove and quick to dry.
Summer
Add a hat, towel and more water. Start early and take extra breaks in hot weather.
Winter
Add warm layers, gloves and a hat. Snow or ice may require equipment beyond ordinary trainers; postpone the hike if you cannot assess the conditions safely.
